Deadly Midtown Crash Underscores Hazards at Atlanta Intersections
A recent crash between a Tesla car and a box truck at one of Midtown Atlanta’s busiest — and most dangerous — intersections left two people dead and three critically injured, according to multiple news reports. The details of the intersection crash, as reported by local media, underscore the hazards drivers face when traveling through many high-traffic intersections in Atlanta, including the one where this fatal motor vehicle accident occurred.
News Report: Tesla Driver Ran Red Light at Intersection
The crash occurred at around 10 a.m. on a Monday at the corner of Piedmont Avenue and Monroe Drive near Smith Park, WSB-TV reports. According to the media outlet, a Tesla car carrying five people ran through a red light and hit the side of the box truck. Video from the accident scene shows the Tesla’s front end lodged beneath the truck.
Emergency crews, including Atlanta Fire and Rescue members, shut down traffic in all directions. First responders pulled two passengers from the Tesla car and performed CPR at the scene, according to Atlanta News First. At the scene, the driver of the Tesla and a passenger were not alert, conscious, or breathing.
After being taken to Grady Memorial Trauma Center, the Tesla driver and passenger, both in their 20s, were pronounced dead. The Tesla’s three other passengers, also in their 20s, were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. The driver of the box truck and a passenger suffered no injuries.
