A fatal shooting took place at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex on Monday evening. An apartment complex in which a series of violent crimes took place in the last year.
The shooting took place at the Villages at Carver Apartments on 201 Moury Ave at approximately 6:30 P.M.
Police say there were two victims of the crime. One died and the other is currently in the hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.
While investigators say that at the time of the shooting, people were gathered for a candlelight vigil.
The vigil was held for the 1-year anniversary of the fatal shooting of two teens, Nyriek Olds, 18, and Jamarquez McCrary, 17, at the same apartment complex last year.
The villages at the Carver apartment complex is on the AJCs “Dangerous Dwellings” list for their frequent violent crime.
In September of last year, a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot after neighbors heard several rounds of gunfire. His name was not released.
Just last month a 16-year-old girl and 20-year-old man were hospitalized after being shot on Sunday, May 7. Their names have not been released yet.
In April of this year, a 14-year-old was hospitalized after being shot. Their identity remains hidden, however, police describe the child’s condition as “alert” while being rushed to the hospital.
“Georgia law requires apartment complexes to take reasonable steps to protect their residents from crime,” says Atlanta Lawyer, Bradley Pratt. “When repeated violent crime occurs at a complex, and the complex has failed to take steps to secure safety, the complex owner and manager might be legally responsible to the victims. It is unacceptable that the Villages at Carver Apartments failed its residents so severely here. How many more people need to be shot before they take action that the law requires?”
Police are still in the early stages of investigating the homicide.
