Police respond to a shooting that occurred around 7:45 p.m. at Cambridge the Pines Apartments on April 17th, 2023.
When they arrived, they found 19-year-old Camera Anderson wounded. Anderson was rushed to East Georgia Regional Medical Center, where he tragically died from his injuries.
Police encourage witnesses to come forward as they struggle to identify a suspect. The bulk of this issue, chief of Statesboro Police, Mike Broadhead, says, stems from a lack of security footage.
The Statesboro Police Department has previously requested that Cambridge, owned by Scion Properties, install security cameras, but the apartment complex denied.
This incident makes it the apartment’s fifth shooting within a week. “This is an unacceptable safety record for any property in the State of Georgia. We must demand better,” says victim attorney Frank Bayuk of Georgia law firm Bayuk Pratt. “When residents are repeatedly victimized by criminals at a property, the owners and managers of that property have a duty to take action. Five shootings at this property — and management failing to take even basic steps for the safety of tenants and guests — is outrageous. Refusing to provide adequate security and to install security cameras is clearly negligent, and management that acts this way should be held accountable.”
One of the shootings occurred the previous Tuesday, April 11. A man was shot at the neighboring apartment complex, Stadium Walk—also owned by Scion Properties. After being shot, the male victim went to relatives in the Cambridge apartments for help.
He was transported to EGRMC and then airlifted to Memorial in Savannah, where he is currently recovering from his injury. No arrests have been made at this time.
Shockingly, Scion Properties apparently denied the request to install security cameras in this complex as well.
