Semi-truck Causes Nightmare Accident on I-285

An accident occurred early Friday morning on I-285 near Riverdale Rd. that claimed the life of a 45-year-old man and injured 4 other people.

The accident was caused when a semi-truck lost unsecured cargo and caused three vehicles to crash. The three vehicles included a Stockbridge patrol car, a tractor-trailer, and the Nissan Rogue—driven by the man killed.

The Georgia State Patrol received word of the crash around 5:32 AM Friday, May 5, 2023. The Stockbridge police department said that the patrol car was assisting the semi-truck when the accident occurred, but the officer was not injured.

When they arrived on the scene, they found 45-year-old Lenin Jose Canelones injured in the crash. Canelones was then pronounced dead on the scene.

“It’s disturbing how often commercial truck crashes could have been prevented by better training, better supervision, and simply following the federal regulations,” trucking lawyer, Bradley Pratt states. “Unsecured cargo needlessly causes too many serious injury and fatality crashes. Most trucking companies do a good job following the rules, but a significant minority do not – with deadly results.”

The four injured are currently receiving treatment at the hospital. Their identities have not been released yet.

All lanes were shut down for three hours beginning just before 6 a.m. for officials to clear the scene.
